The Christian Democratic National Peasants' Party shortly PNTCD or PNTCD ( German  National Christian Democratic Peasant Party ) is a Christian democratic party in Romania .

At the European level, the party had been a member of the European People's Party (EPP) since 1987 , but was excluded in June 2017. The PNȚ-CD has been a member of the European Christian Political Movement (ECPM) since February 2020 .

history

Originally in 1927 the PNȚ (Partidul Național-Țărănesc, dt. National and Peasant Party ) from the PN ( P artidul N ațional al Românilor din Transilvania și Ungaria, dt. National Party of Romanians in Transylvania and Hungary ) by Iuliu Maniu and the PȚ (Partidul Țărănesc, dt. Peasant Party ) emerged under Ion Michalache . The PN had previously been active in Transylvania and in the Banat (in the Austro-Hungarian area), the PȚ in the old Romanian " Regat " ( Old Reich ). The PNȚ was in the interwar period together with the PNL the leading party in the Kingdom of Romania .

In the new Romania

After Nicolae Ceauşescu's fall in 1989, it was Corneliu Coposu who re-established the Romanian Christian Democrats as PNȚ-CD (Partidul Național Țărănesc - Creştin Democrat, German National Peasant Party - Christian Democratic ). Between 1996 and 2000 the PNȚ-CD even succeeded in appointing the Prime Minister in an alliance with the PNL and in a coalition with the Democrats and the Hungarian Union . The government work of the next four years was not suitable, however, to secure the PNȚ-CD in its position. On the contrary: after three PNȚ-CD prime ministers failed in four years, the party no longer even achieved the quorum required to enter parliament in 2000. In 2004 the party was renamed Partidul Popular Creştin Democrat (PPCD); since 2006 it has been called PNȚ-CD again.

present

The party still has strong political influence , especially in Timiș County . At the national level, the PNȚ-CD has lost its former importance. Because of differences of opinion about alliances for the parliamentary elections in 2008 , she threatened to split under the then party chairman Marian Petre Milu die, so that on August 24, 2008 Radu Sârbu was elected as the new chairman.

In the first half of 2011, the rival factions agreed on former Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea as a common candidate for chairmanship. On June 18, 2011, an extraordinary congress elected Victor Ciorbea as party leader.

Since the beginning of 2014 the PNȚCD is no longer represented in the Chamber of Deputies ( Camera Deputa Anfangilor ). In May 2020, MEP Cristian Terheș , who was elected for the Partidul Social Democrat , announced his accession to the (PNȚ-CD) and his move to the ECR group.
