Career

Pat McKay started karate training in Glasgow in 1972 . He learned the Shuko-Kai style from Kimura and Tani, the two chief instructors of the Shuko-Kai, who were at the time in Scotland with Thommy Morris. In 1978 he started for the first time at a European Championship in Geneva . Since he only had the 4th kyū , he was beaten hopelessly. In 1980 he finished 7th with the team from Great Britain at the World Championships in Madrid . Achilles tendon surgery forced him to stop exercising in 1981. The high point of his career was between 1982 and 1987. Here he dominated the weight class up to 80 kg. He was particularly successful in 1984 . In the same year he became world champion with the team from Great Britain and European champion with the team from Scotland. From 1984 he was tutored by the two-time European champion David Coulter. He later trained under professional conditions either alone or with training partners such as Tommy Burns or Geoff Thompson.

To prepare for World or European Championships, Pat McKay trained up to five hours a day. In order to cope with this workload, he gave up his job as a mechanic for pressure instruments on an oil rig and concentrated exclusively on karate. After his active career, he also came to Ravensburg temporarily , where he trained with Toni Dietl ( World Games winner 1989) and Günter Mohr (Vice World Champion in 1977). Various karate educational films were also made at this time. As a result, he has become known primarily in southern Germany . He was the first to popularize a flexible karate style based on the Shobu-Sanbon (fight for 6 half points) in Germany. Although mutual respect was a matter of course for him, his modern karate style was partially rejected by traditional karatekas. Pat McKay also changed the Kiai and brought the Uschaa to Germany. In 2016, he passed his 6th Dan in front of an examination committee chaired by Toni Dietl .

Today Pat McKay lives as a civil engineer in Bucharest and Warsaw .
