Patrick J. Geary

Patrick Joseph Geary (born September 26, 1948 in Jackson , Mississippi ) is an American historian .

Patrick Geary studied medieval history at Yale University in New Haven and from 1968 to 1969 at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven . Geary received his PhD from Yale University in 1974 in medieval history with Roberto Sabatino Lopez and Jaroslav Pelikan . From 1974 to 1980 he was an assistant professor at Princeton University . From 1980 to 1986 he was an Associate Professor at the University of Florida . There he was Professor of History from 1986 to 1993. From 1993 to 2004, and again from 2004 to 2011, he taught as Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles . From 1993 to 1998 he was director at the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies . From 1996 to 1998 he was a director at the UCLA Humanities Consortium. From 1998 to 2000 he was Professor of History and Director of the Medieval Institute at the University of Notre Dame .

Geary taught as visiting professor at the University of Vienna (1983) and at the Central European University (2003). Geary was Directeur d'Etudes associé at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in 1984, 1990 and 2003 . Geary was President of the Medieval Academy of America from 2008 to 2009 . Since 2012, Bynum has been a successor to Caroline Walker Bynum as Professor of History of the Western Middle Ages at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

Geary presented works on reliquary theft (1978) and on the Provençal nobility in the early Middle Ages (1985). In 1988 he published an overview of the Merovingians . The illustration appeared in 1996 in German under the title The Merovingians. Europe before Charlemagne . He was head of the project for the St. Gallen Plan for the Study of Carolingian Monasticism. Geary leads a project in 2019 to study the migration of peoples by analyzing the DNA of human remains from graves of the Lombard times in Italy and Hungary.

Geary has received numerous scientific honors and memberships for his research. In 1990 he was a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for History in Göttingen. He has been a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2010 and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy since 2011 . Geary is Membre Associé Étranger (foreign associate member) of the Société Nationale des Antiquaires . The Academy of Sciences in Göttingen he belongs to also as a corresponding member. In 2011 he was awarded the Anneliese Maier Research Prize by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation . In 2019 Geary was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He is a member of the German Archaeological Institute .
