Patrizia von Brandenstein
Patrizia von Brandenstein (born November 17, 1939 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American film architect and costume designer of Russian-German descent.
Life
The daughter of Russian-German emigrants had traveled through Europe for a long time as a young woman and spent two years in France as a trainee at the Comédie-Française . In the 1960s von Brandenstein worked as a set painter , prop master and tailor at the theater. Among other things, she worked at the Actors Studio . From 1966 she worked for eight years as a costume and set designer at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco . She delivered her first noteworthy costume designs in the fall of 1968 for the productions of 'The Front Page' and 'Don't Shoot Mable It's Your Husband' . Another costume design for the play 'Trumpets and Drums' followed in the fall of 1969 .
In 1971 she switched to film. She began setting the film Bill McKay with Robert Redford . In 1977 she was promoted to chief architect. Since then she has worked with well-known directors such as Miloš Forman , Mike Nichols , Sam Raimi and Brian De Palma . Her greatest challenge, and at the same time Brandenstein's greatest film success, was the musician biography Amadeus in 1983/84 , for which she was allowed to create a comprehensive Rococo ensemble.
Private
She is married to the production designer Stuart Wurtzel (* 1940), whom she met during her time in San Francisco.
Awards
- Brandenstein won an Oscar in 1985 for her designs for Amadeus . She was also nominated in 1982 for Ragtime and in 1988 for The Untouchables - Die Unbrechlichen .
- Also for Amadeus , she was nominated for the BAFTA Award in 1986.
- In 1993 she won the Below-The-Line Award at the Gotham Awards .
