Paul Bard

Paul Heinrich Wilhelm Carl Bard (born March 25, 1839 in Dömitz , † April 17, 1927 in Schwerin ), was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian, superintendent of Schwerin and senior church councilor.

Life

Paul Bard was a son of the pastor and later church councilor August Bard (1808-1896). He attended the Borchersche Boys' Institute in Sülze near Celle and from 1853-1857 the Gymnasium Fridericianum Schwerin . From Michaelmas 1857 he studied Protestant theology at the Universities of Erlangen and Leipzig and from 1859 at the University of Rostock . During his studies he was influenced by Hofmann , Delitzsch , Thomasius , Luthardt and, as a preacher in Leipzig, Friedrich Ahlfeld . After his exams he was first a teacher, 1860/61 tutor in Lohmen, 1861 teacher at the Sarauschen Higher Töchterschule in Schwerin, 1863 vice rector and 1864 rector in Grabow (Elde) . In 1865 he was ordained a pastor and received his first pastor's position at the farmhouse in Güstrow Castle . In November 1869 he was appointed the third cathedral preacher at Schwerin Cathedral , and in 1876 he became the first cathedral preacher and superintendent for the Schwerin district. In 1886 he was appointed senior church councilor and in 1902 secret councilor. In 1909 he retired.

In 1879 he led the Lutheran wedding of the Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III. with the Grand Duchess Anastasia in St. Petersburg . In 1897 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the theological faculty of the University of Rostock. In 1898 he took part in the inauguration of the Church of the Redeemer (Jerusalem) by Kaiser Wilhelm II, together with the President of the Upper Church Council Adolf Giese, as representative of Mecklenburg-Schwerin .

Since 1863 he was married to Anna, geb. Halbach, daughter of an organist in Gadebusch . The couple had ten children.
