Johann Friedrich Ahlfeld (born November 1, 1810 in Mehringen , † March 4, 1884 in Leipzig ) was a German Lutheran theologian and popular popular preacher and author.

Life

Johann Friedrich Ahlfeld, the son of the carpenter and day laborer Johann Christoph Christian Ahlfeld and his wife Marie Sophie, attended high schools in Aschersleben and Dessau and studied Protestant theology in Halle , among others with Carl Ullmann and the historian Heinrich Leo . During his studies he became a member of the Halle fraternity in 1830 and later belonged to the Wingolf .

Ahlfeld became a high school teacher in Zerbst in 1834 , but was dismissed as a former fraternity member in the course of the " demagogue persecution ". In 1837 he became rector in Wörlitz , in 1838 pastor in Alt-Alsleben , where he changed from a rationalist to a strict Lutheran. Appointed to the Laurentiuskirche in Halle at the instigation of August Tholuck in 1847 , he stood up against the influence of the free religious, rationalistic “ friends of light ”. He saw the revolution of 1848/49 as an expression of "lawlessness and illegality". From 1851 he was pastor at the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig, retired in 1882 and died March 4, 1884.

meaning

Ahlfeld's vivid sermons revolving around the subjects of law, sin and grace made him a popular and influential innovator of Lutheranism in Saxony . The draft of the Saxon state hymn book from 1880 goes back to him. In addition, he wrote since 1846 under the pseudonym of a man from the people, the "Vollspänner Warmholz", time observations for the Volksblatt für Stadt und Land for instruction and entertainment . He later published stories from popular life that, like his sermons and popular theological publications, supported political conservatism .

His son of the same name, Johann Friedrich Ahlfeld , became one of the most important obstetricians of his time. The pastor and politician Friedrich Naumann was his grandson.

In 2010 a memorial stone was erected in his place of birth in his honor.
