Carl Christian Ullmann (born March 15, 1796 in Epfenbach near Heidelberg , † January 12, 1865 in Karlsruhe ) was a Reformed mediation theologian and prelate of the Evangelical Church in Baden .

Life and work

Ullmann was born as the son of pastor Johann Balthasar Ullmann and his wife Charlotte nee. Reimold born. One of Ullmann's sisters died in childhood. To learn Latin he came to his uncle in Mosbach, where he first went to school. At the age of ten he came to Heidelberg to the church councilor Maurer in order to be able to attend the grammar school there. At the age of 16 he passed the Abitur there. From 1812 he studied in Heidelberg and Tübingen theology , habilitated in 1819 in Heidelberg as a private, before he received a doctorate phil. In 1821 he was appointed associate professor and in 1826 full professor of theology. In 1824 he married Hulda Mereau, daughter of Sophie Mereau , Clemens Brentano's second wife , who died in 1832. In 1829 he accepted a call as professor in Halle and taught church history , dogmatics and symbolism there . In 1835 he married Thekla von Teufel, the girlfriend of his first wife.

In 1836 he became a church councilor and returned to Heidelberg as a theology professor, and in 1844 he was appointed to the secret church council. In 1853 he gave up teaching in Heidelberg and was appointed as the successor of Ludwig Hüffell to the Protestant prelate and member of the Oberkirchenrat of Baden . He was thus the spiritual director of the church authority, who, with Baron von Wöllwarth, was a secular director of the upper church council. From 1856 he also took over his office and thus combined both management functions of the Baden regional church in one person. He retired in 1861 and died four years later.

From 1828 he published the theological studies and reviews with Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Umbreit in Hamburg .

In his book “Das Wesen des Christianenthums” from 1845 he explained that, in his opinion, Christianity is independent of the orthodox rules of life and that a distinction should be made between belief and dogmatism . His most important historical works are "Gregor von Nazianz" (1825) and "The Reformers before the Reformation" (2 volumes, 1841). Another well-known work is "The Sinlessness of Jesus" (1854).

In addition to his numerous writings, Ullmann also campaigned for the work of the Gustav-Adolf-Werk.
