Pierre Paul Devès , (born November 3, 1837 in Aurillac , † November 12, 1899 ), was a French politician .

Life

Pierre-Paul Devès studied law and settled in Béziers as a lawyer , where he was also elected to the General Council. From 1873 to 1874 he was Maire von Béziers. In the general election of MPs in 1876, the Republicans in the second district of the Béziers arrondissement put him up as their candidate and also pushed through his victory over the monarchist competitor. In 1879 he took over the presidency of the Republican Left . In this role he played an influential role in the negotiations between the government and the chamber majority and successfully represented Léon Gambetta's interests .

Gambetta transferred Devès on November 14, 1881, when he formed his cabinet, the Ministry of Agriculture , but the Devès lost again at the end of January 1882 as a result of the resignation of the entire cabinet. In the meantime he had renounced the Beziers constituency - from which he had been re-elected in 1877 and 1881 - and in December 1881 accepted a mandate for the Chamber of Deputies from the Arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre . In the cabinet formed by Charles Duclerc on August 7, 1882 , he became Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seal. Although he resigned with the entire cabinet on January 28th as a result of the government crisis that was caused by the manifesto issued by Prince Napoleon on January 15, 1883 after Gambetta's death , he took over his position in the newly formed cabinet of Armand Fallières the following day Portfolio again. Less than a month later, however, on February 21, 1883, when the cabinet was overthrown, he had to resign as Minister of Justice. In 1885 Devès was unable to win a seat in parliament, but entered the Senate on August 29, 1886 , where he remained until his death.
