Paul Verbeek

Paul Verbeek (born June 1, 1925 in Cologne ; † December 24, 2019 ) was a German ambassador who, among other things, was ambassador to the Ivory Coast between 1972 and 1976 , German ambassador to Argentina from 1980 to 1984 and most recently from 1987 to 1990 ambassador to the Holy See was.

Life

Paul Verbeek resigned after the school in 1943 voluntarily to the Air Force in, hoping for a mission in front distant kingdom Weather Service . He was able to study meteorology for a semester until December 1943 and was then drafted for use in occupied France. As a 19-year-old he took part in the battle in the Hürtgenwald and, after being admitted to a hospital with jaundice , was taken prisoner from there , from which he was released in 1946.

He then began to study law in 1947 , which he completed after completing his legal preparatory service from 1955 to 1957 as a court assessor at the Cologne Higher Regional Court in 1957. Thereupon he joined the foreign service in 1957 and after completing his preparatory service for the career of the higher foreign service between 1958 and 1960 he was assistant in Section 100 (General Personnel Matters) of Department 1 (Personnel and Administration Department) at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn .

After working at the Embassy in France from 1960 to 1965 , he worked at the Consulate General in Boston between 1965 and 1966 , during which time he completed a course as part of the Advanced Study Program at Harvard University . After his return, he worked again at the headquarters of the Foreign Office from 1966 to 1968 and then from 1968 to 1970 assistant officer in Group II / 1 (Foreign Policy Affairs) in Department II of the Federal Chancellery .

Verbeek was then transferred to the Federal Government's Press and Information Office in 1970 , where, until 1972, he was Head of Division IV A 2, which is responsible for France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, the EEC and other European organizations, in sub-division IV A of Division IV ( Foreign countries). He then took over the post of ambassador to Ivory Coast in 1972 , which he held until 1976. After his return he was Deputy Head of Department 5 (Legal Department) at the headquarters of the Foreign Office between 1976 and 1980. He was temporarily head of delegation at the CSCE negotiations. In 1980 he succeeded Joachim Jaenicke as German ambassador to Argentina , where he was accredited until he was replaced by Count Hans-Werner Finck von Finckenstein in 1987 . From 1984 to 1987 he was employed as chief inspector of the Foreign Office.

Verbeek last succeeded Peter Hermes as ambassador to the Holy See in 1987 . He held this post until his retirement in 1990 and was then replaced by Hans-Joachim Hallier .

He was a member of the Catholic student union K.St.V. Suevia Köln in KV .
