Paul Verdzekov

Paul Verdzekov (born January 22, 1931 in Shisong , Cameroon ; † January 26, 2010 in Ntasen , Cameroon) was a Cameroonian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Bamenda in Cameroon.

Life

Paul Verdzekov attended the Small Seminary in Sasse and was a preparatory teacher at the St. Joseph Junior Primary School Djottin from 1945 to 1947 , which at that time belonged to the Shisong parish. In 1947 he worked at the Sacred Heart Boys School Shisong. From 1948 to 1950 he attended the Elementary Teacher's Training Center in Njinikom and was then a teacher at the Catholic school in Bambui, from 1952 to 1954 at the Holy Family Minor Seminary in Sasse. He met Bernard Fonlon , who moved him to change from teaching to priesthood .

In 1954 he entered the seminary Bigard Memorial Seminary one in Enugu. From 1958 to 1962 he studied at the Roman Pontificio Collegio Urbano . Paul Verdzekov was ordained a priest on December 20, 1961 and completed a degree in social sciences at the Pontifical Gregorian University . In 1965 he returned to Cameroon and worked in pastoral care. From 1967 to 1969 he completed a doctoral degree at the Gregoriana in Rome.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on August 13, 1970 as the first bishop of the diocese of Bamenda founded on the same date. The episcopal ordination donated him the Bishop of Buéa , Willem Peeters MHM , on November 8, 1970; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Garoua , Yves-Joseph-Marie Plumey OMI , and the Bishop of Sangmélima , Pierre-Célestin Nkou .

With the elevation of the diocese of Bamenda to the archbishopric on March 18, 1982 Pope John Paul II appointed him archbishop of Bamenda. He was also an Apostolic Administrator in Kumbo.

He held numerous offices in the African Synod of Bishops . In 1989 he became a member of the preparatory committee of the Special Representative for Africa of the Synod of Bishops, in which he served as chairman of the subcommittee on the proclamation; In 1994 he was chairman of the commission for the synodal assembly.

Pope Benedict XVI took his age-related resignation . on January 23, 2006.
