Paul Wagner (born January 23, 1617 in Leipzig ; † April 11, 1697 ibid) was an Electoral Saxon lawyer and mayor of the city of Leipzig twelve times between 1663 and 1696 .

family

Wagner came from a Leipzig councilor family. He was the son of the lawyer Paulus Wagner (born October 15, 1584 in Braunschweig , † November 19, 1633 in Leipzig) and his second wife Elisabeth, née. Dreuer, daughter of the Leipzig wine merchant Abraham Dreuer. Wagner's grandfather of the same name, Magister Paul Wagner (1549–1627) and his great-grandfather Wolfgang Wagner († 1559) were councilors in Leipzig.

Wagner married on November 1, 1647 in the Leipzig Nikolaikirche (Leipzig) Maria geb. Uncle († March 10, 1688 in Leipzig), daughter of the Leipzig councilor Sebastian Oheim (1596–1662) and his first wife Susanna geb. Schielert († 1627). The couple had seven children, including:

  • Paulus Wagner (born June 19, 1648 in Leipzig; † September 17, 1661 ibid),
  • Gottfried Wagner (* July 24, 1652 in Leipzig; † April 16, 1725 ibid), philologist , poet , Leipzig councilor and master builder ,
  • Christian Wagner (born February 20, 1663 in Leipzig; † July 28, 1663 ibid), Magister, pastor and numismatist ,
  • Maria Elisabeth Wagner. In 1670 she married the lawyer Paulus Franciscus Romanus (1641–1675), and after his death Gerhard Nutrient Man.

Career

Wagner studied law at the University of Leipzig and also undertook scientific trips to Dresden , Prague , Regensburg , Augsburg , Munich and Trento during his studies . At the University of Pisa he was "Procurator divi Marci", then at the University of Padua "Procurator nat. Germ." and "Consiliarius Hispanicus". In 1642, after the siege of the city of Leipzig was lifted, Wagner returned to his hometown, where he received the degree of "Baccalaureus Juris" (bac.jur.) In 1646 and a doctorate in law (Dr. jur.) In 1648.

In 1653 Wagner became assessor at the Oberhofgericht and assessor at the Lübben Provincial Court . In 1655 he was appointed full professor at the law faculty of the University of Leipzig, in 1657 he was appointed rector there.

In 1658, Wagner became a councilor and proconsul on the Leipzig city council. In 1663 he became the ruling mayor of the trade fair city for the first time. In the following years he continued to work as one of the three mayors of the city of Leipzig and was governing mayor of Leipzig a total of 12 times in 1666, 1669, 1672, 1675, 1678, 1681, 1684, 1687, 1690, 1693 and 1696. After Wagner fell ill with facial paralysis in 1690 , Adrian Steger took over his position. In the years 1693 and 1696 Wagner and Steger held the office of mayor together.

Wagner was an assessor and later a senior at the Electoral Saxon Schöffenstuhl, a senior at the Leipzig Faculty of Law and law consultancy.
