Paul von Nießen

Paul von Nießen , until 1904 van Nießen , (born September 11, 1857 in Stettin ; † February 28, 1937 there ) was a German high school teacher and historian . He researched and published on the history of the Neumark and the history of Pomerania .

Life

Nießen was born the son of a merchant in Stettin , his father's family was an old Gdansk merchant family. His mother Laura Müller was the daughter of the organist of the Nikolai Johannis congregation in Szczecin . His father died when Nießen was two years old. His mother then moved with him to Dramburg , where she first worked as a music teacher and then remarried. Nießen grew up in Dramburg and attended grammar school until he graduated from high school in 1875.

He studied history and geography at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin . During his studies in 1875 he became a member of the Arminia fraternity in Berlin . In 1882 he was qualified to teach history, geography and Latin; later the qualification to teach religion was added. After working in Neustettin , Breklum and Greifenberg i. Pom. he came to the Schiller-Realgymnasium in his native city of Szczecin in 1885. Here he was appointed professor ( grammar school professor ) in 1905. In 1914 he switched to the Bismarck secondary school in Stettin, but did military service from 1914 to 1917 during the First World War , first with the General Command of the II Army Corps and then as leader of a replacement company. In 1920 he retired.

In 1904 he had his birth name "van Nießen" changed to "von Nießen", which is said to have been documented.

He researched and published on the history of the Neumark and the history of Pomerania . His most important works are the "History of the City of Dramburg" (1897) and the "History of the Neumark in the Age of Its Formation and Settlement" (1905). He also wrote historical plays. Paul von Nießen was an honorary member of the Society for Pomeranian History and Archeology .
