List of grape varieties

Pelaverga is a grape variety that is native to the Piedmont region , Italy . It produces bright ruby red wines and is used in the DOC wine-growing regions of Colline Saluzzesi , Collina Torinese and Verduno Pelaverga . The Pelaverga ripens late (around the first week of October).

Cultivation areas and distribution

Pelaverga has been very widespread in Piedmont since the Middle Ages , but has been increasingly replaced by the Barbera and Nebbiolo grape varieties . Pelaverga can also be called Pelaverga grosso. In contrast, there is also a grape variety called Pelaverga piccolo, but they are not identical. The names can be traced back to the different sizes of the grapes and berries.

  • Pelaverga (grosso) grows around Saluzzo and Chieri . Here it is used in the wines of the respective DOC growing areas Colline Saluzzesi and Collina Torinese and also referred to as Pelaverga di Pagno or Cari .
  • Pelaverga piccolo is grown in Verduno , a place in the Langhe that is part of the Barolo growing area. The red wine made from these grapes is called Verduno Pelaverga or simply Verduno . Vines for this wine can also be found on designated areas of the municipalities of La Morra and Roddi d'Alba. According to tradition, the Pelaverga grown here was imported from the area around Saluzzo , but is now considered an independent variety.
