Josef Pelz von Felinau (born October 24, 1895 in St. Pölten , † February 15, 1978 in West Berlin ) was a writer , actor , screenplay and radio play writer .

Life

Josef Pelz von Felinau came from a Moravian family. His grandfather Joseph Pelz was raised to the nobility by Emperor Franz-Josef I in 1879 and was then called Joseph Pelz Ritter von Felinau. His grandson Josef attended the military academy in Vienna and also the conservatory. He then worked for a short time as a deck officer in the Austrian merchant navy. In about 1915 he wrote an extensive poem entitled The Downfall of the Titanic . In the foreword to the booklet he stated that he was on board the Carpathia , the rescue ship of the Titanic survivors. This claim by the then around 20-year-old, which probably only served to make his book more interesting, haunted him for the rest of his life. Later he was very embarrassed. After quitting the shipping service, he went on tour through Austria and later through Germany with self-composed dramatic poems. He was very successful with it (e.g. with The sinking of the "Titanic". A melodramatic epic .).

After the abolition of the title of nobility in Austria after the First World War , Josef Pelz Ritter von Felinau temporarily called himself Josef Pelz-Felinau and after moving to Berlin (1922) Josef Pelz von Felinau. In Berlin he also appeared in cabarets with Kurt Tucholsky and Erich Kästner , had his first radio play (at that time a new genre) in February 1925 in the Vox-Haus Berlin and went on guest tours. From 1930 he created entire series of radio plays about famous musicians.

In 1936 he wrote his book Titanic. The tragedy of an ocean liner . This received amended text versions in 1939, 1944 and 1950. In the 1939 version, Hitler's personal physician Theo Morell appears as a ship's doctor; the second officer is a German named Max Dittmar-Pittmann. The novel has been translated into various languages.

After the Second World War he created radio plays about famous scientists and Russian explorers and researchers. On November 28, 1950, the Südwestfunk Baden-Baden broadcast its radio play Titanic for the first time .

He created hundreds of radio play manuscripts, which together with some of the sound recordings made from them are now in the German Broadcasting Archive.
