Pere Bosch i Gimpera (Spanish Pedro Bosch y Gimpera, born March 29, 1891 in Barcelona , † October 9, 1974 in Mexico City ) was an archaeologist and prehistorian . He was one of the most famous Catalan scientists of his time.

Academic life

He began law to study, but then switched to philosophy . Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff took him to Berlin to study prehistory. His first publications dealt with the Minoan culture (1912) and the origin of the Greek tragedy (1913). He also translates Homer . In 1915 he became director of the excavations at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans and teacher of the Estudis Universitaris Catalans. In 1916 he became professor of ancient history at the University of Barcelona . In 1919 he published the book Prehistòria catalana . Since then he has been an advocate of the use of the Catalan language in scientific publications.

From 1919 until his death he corresponded with his student, colleague and friend Lluís Pericot i Garcia. Another important student was Josep de Calassanç Serra i Ràfols. He was one of the founders of the Associació Catalana d'Antropologia, Etnografia i Prehistòria (Catalan Society of Anthropology, Ethnography and Prehistory). In 1929 he organized an international symposium on archeology in Barcelona.

Political life

In the left-wing Catalan regional government of Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC, Republican Left of Catalonia) by Lluís Companys Bosch i Gimpera took over during the civil war since 29. June 1937 the Office of the Minister of Justice of Catalonia (Conseller de Justícia). After the defeat of the Republican forces, Bosch i Gimpera fled like many other prominent Spanish left-wing intellectuals into exile in Mexico. In 1942 he obtained Mexican citizenship.
