Cityscape
As the administrative center of Eastern Albania, Peshkopia has quickly grown from a small village to a city. During the day the city is full of people doing their errands in the city's shops or offices or selling vegetables and fruit at the market. There is a small boulevard with trees on either side. To the left and right of this pedestrian-only street are the administration buildings, the cultural center and the former Albturist Hotel. On the slope above the street that leads down to the river, the district called Treg is located with a market and numerous older houses. The valley cut of the river divides the city into two parts: South of the river on a hill away from the center is the Dobrova district with numerous prefabricated buildings.
Attractions
The museum, the only attraction for tourists next to the Ottoman houses, a new large mosque, the lovely landscape and somewhat nearby national parks , has been closed for a long time.
The sulfur - Spa Llixhat , a few kilometers east of the center, however, also attracts visitors from distant areas. Hotels offer cures that usually last several weeks. However, individual baths by day guests and baths in freely accessible pools are also possible.
history
The warm, sulphurous springs were already known to the Romans . The name Peshkopia is derived from the Greek Episcopi ( bishop's seat), which indicates an early Christianization . In the Ottoman period, Peshkopia was a small market town, always in the shadow of the town of Dibra , which is now across the border in North Macedonia.
Sports
