Abetz began after his school education at the University of Tasmania in Hobart to study agricultural sciences , which he completed in 1973 with a bachelor's degree. He first worked for a year in the Tasmanian Ministry of Agriculture and then in the private sector as an agricultural consultant. At the same time he studied theology at the Reformed Theological College in Geelong from 1980 to 1983 , thereby earning a Bachelor of Divinity . politics

In September 2008, Abetz ran for a seat in the West Australian House of Commons in the Southern River constituency, southeast of Perth . In doing so, he managed to beat the mandate holder Paul Andrews from the Labor Party (ALP). In 2013 he was still able to defend his seat with a clear lead, but in March 2017 he lost to his challenger Terry Healy from the ALP. One reason for this was the changed layout of his constituency, as a result of which he lost the conservative areas of Canning Vale and included more electorates close to the Labor Party in the suburbs of Gosnells . Abetz was seen as a backbencher , for his constituency he particularly campaigned for the improvement of traffic conditions, including the introduction of passenger transport on a railway line that was previously only operated for goods traffic with the construction of two stations in Canning Vale. After leaving Parliament, Abetz was elected to Gosnells City Council.

Positions

Abetz is counted on the religious right and is, along with Nick Goiran , the most important representative of this wing within the Liberal Party in Western Australia. In early 2018, he became chairman of the Western Australian National Association of the Australian Christian Lobby . The aim of this influential organization is to make conservative Christian moral ideas heard in politics; At the forefront is the fight against the approval of same-sex marriages . Other concerns are the rejection of abortions , opposition to egg and sperm donation , surrogacy , euthanasia and the liberalization of brothels . Abetz had during his time as an MP a distinct aversion to the demands of the LGBT shown Association of and in this context of a "militant lobby of gays and lesbians" ( English militant gay lesbian lobby spoken).

family

Peter Abetz's younger brother, Eric , is also a Liberal politician and a longtime member of the Australian Senate . The grandfather of the two was the forest scientist and university professor Karl Abetz , whose brother, the Nazi diplomat Otto Abetz, was accordingly a great-uncle; the maternal grandfather was a cousin of Erwin Rommel . Abetz is married and has five grown children, three sons and two daughters.
