Peter Chiarelli (born August 5, 1964 in Nepean , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current - functional . As General Manager , he was in charge of the Boston Bruins (2006–2015) and the Edmonton Oilers (2015–2019) in the National Hockey League .
Career
Chiarelli played during his junior years for the ice hockey team at Harvard University , for whose team he was active in the National Collegiate Athletic Association from 1983 to 1987 . The center completed 109 games for Harvard University, in which he scored 49 points and received 70 penalty minutes. He played in the 1987/88 season with the Nottingham Panthers in the British Hockey League four league games, in which he scored 13 points and received two penalty minutes.
He graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in economics in 1987 and a law degree . He was admitted to the bar in 1993 and spent six years as a lawyer and gaming agent .
He was later named Assistant General Manager of the Ottawa Senators for two years. Chiarelli was named general manager of the Boston Bruins on May 26, 2006 after his predecessor Mike O'Connell had been fired from the Bruins. He took up this position on July 8, 2006. He was fired after the 2014/15 season after the Bruins failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Just days later, he was introduced as the new General Manager and President of Hockey Operations at the Edmonton Oilers , succeeding Craig MacTavish .
He also served as General Manager of Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey , a selection of U23 players from Canada and the USA.
In Edmonton, Chiarelli was fired in January 2019 after he had failed to put together a successful athletic team around Connor McDavid for several years . In particular, due to some controversial transfer deals, he had previously come under criticism.
