Peter Florian (born June 9, 1964 in Gmünd , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian painter and graphic artist.

Life

Peter Florian spent his youth and school days in Weitra in Lower Austria. In 1979 he moved with his family to Vienna, where he completed an apprenticeship as a chef at the Hotel Intercontinental Vienna from 1979 to 1982 . During this time he made the first drawings and watercolors , which he sold to his work colleagues. His first ever watercolor was the portrait of Falco in 1982.

His first exhibition took place in 1987 in a gallery in Vienna. In 1989 he gave up his learned profession and became a freelance artist. His first etching appeared in the Edition Galerie Zentrum in 1990 . Several graphics follow. His first international exhibition followed in 1992 in Geneva at Europe Art .

In 1995 he was commissioned by Hubert Neuper , head of the organizing committee for the 1996 World Ski Championships at Kulm, to design a stamp and a poster. The stamp of the Austrian Post appeared in 1996 with a circulation of 2.5 million and was worth seven schillings . Peter Florian also designed the first day cover and the first day cancellation . The first poster draft for the 1996 Schifflug-WM was published in the book Schisport in Kunst und Design by Karin Rase, Edition Leipzig, published in 2009. The book received the prestigious Ullr Award from the International Skiing History Association in 2010.

In 2002 he designed the cloakroom and the sauna rest rooms of the newly built indoor pool "Aqua Nova" in Wiener Neustadt . The frieze that runs through the entire cloakroom area is 40 meters long and 1.5 meters high. In 2004 he designed the cover for the musician Raphael Wressnig (Raphael Wressnig's Organic Trio) for his new CD In Between .

The works of Peter Florian are owned by the Wien Museum , the Albertina Graphic Collection and the Lower Austria Museum . He is a member of the "Art Forum Graz".

Artistic development

His interest in the female body is already evident in his first picture ( Körper, 1980). The oil pastel drawing is filled with luscious, busty female bodies. The erotic subsequently plays an important role in his art. In the 1980s I mainly created ink drawings with watercolors. In 1987 he illustrated the book Beauty for Body and Soul by Adelheid Firbas . The Galerie Zentrum Wien edited his first etchings in 1990.

From 1990 the first attempts with acrylic painting took place. Partly large-format works with erotic content were created. For the exhibition “Advertising in Art - Art in Advertising”, his two acrylic paintings are not hung up because of their pornographic content.

In the mid-1990s he worked intensively on portraiture . He portrayed well-known Austrian and international personalities such as B. Falco , Gerda Rogers , Manfred Buchinger , Rudolf Kaske , Birgit Doll , Madonna , Lady Diana , Pope John Paul II. His work, the style of which could initially be classified as Classical Modernism , became increasingly freer and more abstract.

At the beginning of the new millennium he was invited to work on the calendar project Koch und Kunst together with artists such as Hans Staudacher , Jürgen Messensee , Manfred Bockelmann , Sebastian Weissenbacher, Roger Gressl and well-known Austrian chefs . The original pictures and handwritten recipes were auctioned. The proceeds went to the “ Austria 3 (Ambros, Fendrich, Danzer) homeless initiative”.

At the beginning of the new millennium, the object image forms the focus of his work. With the Rauch cycle (2004), a series of 13 small object pictures, he started to create his pictures three-dimensionally and used different materials such as wood, screws, nails, wire, cord and objects to create the picture. Subsequently, he processed his catalog, Works on Paper (1998), in which he tore out pages, tore off or cut up parts and created a new three-dimensional image through targeted gluing and painting over. The result was the Deja Vu picture cycle (37 works).

In the “Pleasure Gate Series”, the focus was on the female genital formed from the works on paper catalog . In addition to the materials already used in the Rauch cycle , he also used tights and photos for formal design. He developed a visual language that clearly stood out from his painting. The message was expressed through the collage and assemblage . The picture became more abstract, the painting more structural and monochrome in color.

In 2009 a series of computer graphics was created with consistently erotic and, in some cases, pornographic content.

In 2010 he devoted himself again intensively to portrait painting and for his exhibition Faces of a City at the Kunsthaus Weiz he portrayed over 50 Weiz personalities.

In September 2010 he was one of 50 artists who showed their object pictures for Absolut Art , the art collection of the vodka brand Absolut, at an exhibition at the art-com gallery in Vienna.

His works have been included in numerous collections, including the Lower Austria Museum, Albertina Graphic Collection, Essl Collection, Klosterneuburg, Vienna Museum, Museum of Erotic Art of the Tom of Finland Foundation, Los Angeles / USA; Burgenland State Gallery, Eisenstadt; Collection of the “Otto Wagner Galerie” Vienna.

The graphic work

The first attempt at printmaking The appearance appeared in 1990 in the Edition Galerie Zentrum Wien. The color etching was done in the Zejmon printing workshop. Two more color etchings follow.

The etching Der Beamte was created in the Edition Galerie Zentrum in Kurt Zein's printing workshop . This one collaboration with Kurt Zein was to remain.

Some limited-edition single sheets and the series The AH Experience (homage to Alfred Hrdlicka ) and The dirty church were created in the Erbler studio.

In the mid-1990s, Florian met the copper printer and artist Josef Mühlbacher . He was to become his regular printer and friend for the next few years. In Josef Mühlbacher, who completed his printer apprenticeship with Walter Fischer and also worked for Kurt Zein before opening his own printing workshop, he had found a partner who, in addition to mastering perfect printing technology, also had the necessary artistic understanding for the experimental Florian. This collaboration resulted in almost 50 etchings in 10 years . The last joint project was the series Power and Pain - 12 Etchings for Marquis de Sade 2006.

Peter Florian also dealt with woodcut . Between 1997 and 2003 he created over 20 woodblock prints on his own press. The Graz gallery DIDA commissioned him in 2000 to produce a series of Styrian cityscapes, which were to be exhibited for the opening of the "Cultural Capital Graz 2003". After the sudden death of the gallery owner and client, he stopped the series after six works.

In 2009 he started with computer graphics . Since his computer graphics were preceded by a photo montage or photo collage before he finished them on the computer, he called this work comfographics (computer photography). The series includes around 30 works.
