Peter Haber (historian)
Peter Haber (born January 15, 1964 in Basel ; † April 28, 2013 ibid) was a Swiss historian and lecturer in general history of modern times at the University of Basel .
Life
Haber studied general history, history of Switzerland , sociology , philosophy and constitutional law at the University of Basel and the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . In Basel, he was charged with a 2005 dissertation on the history of Jews in Hungary PhD ; It was there that he completed his habilitation on the subject of history and digital media . He completed additional training in archive and information sciences at the University of Bern .
With the Swiss historian Jan Hodel, he founded the website hist.net in 1998 , an international platform on the subject of historical studies in the digital age .
Since 1999 he has been teaching at the University of Basel and the University of Lucerne , and from 2004 he was editor-in-chief at H-Soz-u-Kult .
As part of a research project from 2007 to 2011, Haber and Hodel dealt with the importance of Wikipedia for the historical sciences. He also examined the historical foundation of Wikipedia's self-image as the successor to the Alexandria Library and the Encyclopédie . He formulated his criticism of Wikipedia articles in the humanities area as follows:
«The weaknesses of Wikipedia (lie) precisely there […], where many suspect its greatest strength: It is not particularly suitable for getting an initial overview of a complex topic. [...] It is a very demanding task to introduce a historical topic in a tight space. Such contributions are not suitable to be written cooperatively. "
In the summer semester of 2010, Haber was visiting professor for history, didactics and digital media at the University of Vienna .
Haber died on April 28, 2013 after a long and serious illness.
