Peter Leo Ireton

Peter Leo Ireton (born September 21, 1882 in Baltimore , USA , † April 27, 1958 in Georgetown ) was Bishop of Richmond .

Life

Peter Leo Ireton studied Philosophy and Catholic Theology at St. Charles College in Catonsville and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. He received on 29 June 1906 by the Archbishop of Baltimore , James Gibbons , the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Ireton then became a curate at St. Gregory's Church . In 1926 he became pastor of St. Ann's Parish in Baltimore. In 1929 he was awarded the honorary title of Papal House Prelate .

On August 3, 1935, Pope Pius XI appointed him . the titular bishop of Cyme and ordered him to Coadjutor Bishop of Richmond. The Archbishop of Baltimore, Michael Joseph Curley , donated him episcopal ordination on October 23 of that year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Scranton , Thomas Charles O'Reilly , and the Bishop of Omaha , James Hugh Ryan . The inauguration took place on November 6, 1935.

Peter Leo Ireton became Bishop of Richmond on April 14, 1945, succeeding the resigned Andrew James Louis Brennan . 1956 Ireton became papal assistant to the throne .

The Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria was named after him.
