John Joyce Russell (born December 1, 1897 in Baltimore , USA , † March 17, 1993 in Richmond , Virginia ) was Bishop of Richmond .

Life

John Joyce Russell attended Calvert Hall College and Loyola High School . From 1912 to 1917 he attended St. Charles College in Ellicott City , Maryland . Russell received a Master of Arts degree from St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore in 1919 . He received on 8 July 1923, the sacrament of Holy Orders . 1923 John Joyce Russell at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome in the subject Catholic Theology doctorate .

From 1923 to 1937, John Joyce Russell was a curate at St. Martin Church . From 1927 to 1946 he was also the diocesan director of the Holy Name Societes and the Catholic Evidence Guild . In 1937 Russell became pastor of St. Ursula Parish in Baltimore. Pope Pius XII awarded him the honorary title of papal house prelate in 1945 . From 1946 to 1948 he was pastor of St. Patrick's Parish in Washington, DC and from 1946 to 1950 diocesan director of the Catholic Charities . In 1948 John Joyce Russell became a pastor at the Church of the Nativity .

On January 28, 1950, Pope Pius XII appointed him. to the Bishop of Charleston . The Apostolic Delegate in the United States, Archbishop Amleto Giovanni Cicognani , ordained him episcopal on March 14 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Washington , Patrick Aloysius O'Boyle , and the Auxiliary Bishop of Washington, John Michael McNamara . On July 3, 1958, Pius XII appointed him. to the Bishop of Richmond. The inauguration took place on September 30 of the same year.

Russell attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

On April 28, 1973 Pope Paul VI. the resignation put forward by John Joyce Russell for reasons of age.
