Peter Mervyn Hunt

Sir Peter Mervyn Hunt , GCB , DSO , OBE (* 11. March 1916 ; † 2. October 1988 ) was an officer in the British Army , who most recently as General from 1973 to 1976 Chief of General Staff of the British Army was. Later, he served from 1980 to 1985 as Constable of the Tower (Constable of the Tower) and was the highest officer of the Tower of London .

Life

Officer training and assignments as officer and staff officer

Peter Mervyn Hunt, son of HV Hunt, attended Wellington College in Berkshire and then began officer training at the Royal Military College Sandhurst . Once finished, he became 1936 lieutenant (Second Lieutenant) in the line infantry regiment Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and participated in the Second World War in part. In March 1960 he became Brigadier General (Brigadier) Commander ( Commanding Officer ) of the 152nd Infantry Brigade (152nd Infantry (Highland) Brigade) stationed in Inverness and remained in this post until January 1962. On his return he was in January 1966 as the successor to Major General John Mogg in command of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and worked there until August 1968, whereupon Major General Philip Tower succeeded him.

This was followed by Peter Hunt in November 1968 Lieutenant General (Lieutenant General) and took over from Lieutenant General Thomas Pearson the post of commander in chief of the land forces in the Far East (General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Far East Land Forces) and practiced this command to his replacement by Major General Walter Babington "Sandy" Thomas in October 1970. Chief of the General Staff and Constable of the Tower

In August 1980, Sir Peter Mervyn Hunt succeeded Field Marshal Geoffrey Harding Baker as Constable of the Tower of London , making him the highest officer of the Tower of London. He held this office until July 1985 and was then replaced again by General Roland Gibbs. He was also awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).

Hunt has been married twice. His first marriage was on February 24, 1940, with Anne Frances Joan Stopford, daughter of Vice Admiral Arthur Stopford and Mary Augusta Grace Chester-Master, and was married to her until their death on July 19, 1966. From this marriage the daughter Nicola Mary Isobel Hunt and the son Robin Chester Vaughan Hunt, who served as a colonel in the British Army, emerged. The second marriage to Susan Davidson was childless.
