Peter Michelsen (Germanist)

Peter Michelsen (born January 17, 1923 in Mölln / Duchy of Lauenburg ; † April 16, 2008 in Wilhelmsfeld ) was a German specialist in German .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1941 and doing military service until 1945, he began studying German philology , philosophy and art history at the Georg-August University of Göttingen in the winter semester 1945/46 , where he received his doctorate in 1951 under Klaus Ziegler on Friedrich Hebbel's diaries . From 1952 to 1954 he was a lecturer at University College in Aberystwyth , Wales and from 1957 to 1959 professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax , Canada. Back in Göttingen, he completed his habilitation in 1960 as an assistant to Wolfgang Kayser with the work Laurence Sterne and the German novel of the 18th century .

After a substitute professor at the University of Tübingen , he was appointed professor in 1963, initially at the Technical University of Braunschweig and in 1967 at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He taught there until his retirement in 1988.

Since 1979 he has been an honorary professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax, where he has taught several times at the German Department. In 1999 he was awarded the Golden Goethe Medal of the Goethe Society Weimar.
