Peter Scantlebury MBE (born November 21, 1963 in Camberwell , London ) is a retired English basketball coach and player. Scantlebury is the all-time leader of the British Basketball League (BBL), the record holder for appearances and points. After his active career, the long-time national player moved to the coaching bench for England and won the BBL Cup and the BBL play-offs in his first season as coach in charge in 2004 . He was also a coach for the English national team, which won the bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games . His younger brother Richard was also a player in the BBL and England international.

Career

Scantlebury began his career as a basketball player with the Pirates of Guildford , who moved to Bracknell a year later . Scantlebury went to study at Winthrop University in Rock Hill in northern South Carolina . Their basketball team Eagles took part in the NAIA competitions until the mid-1980s before they switched to the NCAA . As early as 1985 Scantlebury returned to his homeland to the Pirates, who from 1987 played as Tigers in the newly founded BBL. Here she was able to qualify twice for the play-offs of the top eight teams, in which they were eliminated against the Scottish team MIM Livingston . For this they won the "National Cup" in 1989, which was played without the dominant Scottish teams this season, and the League Cup BBL Trophy, where they could defeat Livingston in the final. In 1990 they just missed third place in the regular season because of the poorer direct comparison against the Sunderland 76ers and were eliminated in the play-off semifinals against the Kingston Kings, who dominated that season .

In the 1990/91 season Scantlebury played together with Russ Saunders and the " Most Valuable Player " (MVP) of the previous BBL season Clyde Vaughan for the 76ers from Sunderland , who won the Kingston Kings for the first time in the final of the National Cup Defeated the knockout game for two years. In a new edition of the play-off final game of the preseason between the main round first Kings and the second 76ers, however, the otherwise dominant Kings were defeated. From 1991 Scantlebury played for the London Towers, which had found two years earlier as Docklands admission to the BBL, where they each had reached the bottom of the table with a total of three wins in two seasons. As Towers you were now much more successful and reached the play-off semi-finals, which were lost to local rivals and again dominating Kingston Kings. In the play-off semifinals of the following season you lost Scantlebury's former team Tigers in the play-off semifinals.

Scantleburg returned in 1993 to the Tigers, who played under the name Thames Valley Tigers since 1990, and was able to defend the Tigers' title win in the BBL Trophy together with, among other things, the MVP of the 1993/94 season Nigel Lloyd . In the final of the National Cup in 1994 they lost to previous year's champions Worthing Bears . As the main round first of the BBL you surprisingly failed in the first play-off round against the Derby Bucks . In the 1994/95 season it was enough to defend the title in the BBL Trophy when you beat the Sheffield Sharks in the final, against which you lost the final in the National Cup. In the play-offs, however, they lost second again in the first round against defending champion Worthing Bears. In the 1995/96 season it was not enough to top places and finals and as table eight they were eliminated for the third time in a row in the first round of the play-offs. After you even missed the play-offs completely in the following season, Scantlebury left the club in 1997 and went to the Eagles in Newcastle-upon-Tyne , which had emerged from his former team from Sunderland. However, the Eagles have remained unsuccessful since their move from Sunderland and were eliminated in the BBL Trophy in the semi-finals against the eventual winners London Towers. After a third place in the main round, the season ended with Scantlebury's almost customary first-round bout against the same opponent who later also won the play-off title.

For the 1998/99 season, Scantlebury, who was now not quite 35, joined the Sharks from Sheffield . After winning the National Cup, season MVP Terrell Myers also finished the regular season of the BBL in first place, but in the semi-finals of the play-offs the London Towers retained the upper hand. The success in the National Cup could be repeated in 2000, but in the play-offs they were eliminated in the first round. The title defense in the cup was no longer successful in 2001, but as the first of the "Conference North" of the BBL, which was now divided into regional divisions, they made it to the play-off final, which was lost in 2001 against the Leicester Riders . Scantlebury, although still active on the field, also became assistant to head coach Chris Finch . In the renewed play-off finals, however, they lost against the Chester Jets, who dominated this season . After an early exit in the cup competitions, they reached the play-offs as the main round first in the 2002/03 season. But here too there were weaknesses in knockout games. After an arduous opening win in the first round after extra time, they were eliminated in the semifinals against the eventual title winner Scottish Rocks . Coach Finch then left the Sharks and became a coach on the mainland, where he initially took over the Gießen 46ers in the German basketball league . Scantlebury ended his active career after 540 missions and 8,324 points in the BBL with the respective record values in these categories and became Finch's successor as the responsible coach. In his first season as head coach, the Sharks were able to win the BBL Cup, which had replaced the National Cup as a cup competition. Also in the play-offs you could not be beaten in knockout games and won the final against the Chester Jets as second in the main round.

As an English national player, Scantleburg had never qualified for the final tournament of a European basketball championship with the English national team. Participation in the Olympic Games was never within reach for the British Olympic selection. After becoming assistant coach in the national team in 2002, he was also appointed head coach of the English selection in 2004. Although he could not qualify the team for a final participation in FIBA competitions, but when a basketball competition was held for the first time at the Commonwealth Games , the selection only lost to New Zealand and hosts Australia in the semifinals. A convincing 80:57 victory was achieved against Nigeria in the bronze medal match. After the 2012 Olympic Games were awarded in the British capital, London , a permanent British national team has now been set up instead of a temporary British Olympic selection , for which his former teacher Chris Finch has been appointed as coach instead of Scantlebury. With the Sheffield Sharks Scantlebury was able to achieve top placings after the initial successes in 2004, but could not celebrate any title wins. After you only finished sixth in the main round in the 2007/08 season, a year later, being sixth, you had a negative balance with more defeats than wins. Scantlebury resigned from his position as a trainer and worked from 2011 as a teacher at the Aston Academy in Rotherham .
