Peter Schnürpel

Peter Schnürpel (born February 20, 1941 in Leipzig ) is a German painter and graphic artist. He lives and works in Altenburg and is considered a representative of the Leipzig School .

Life and artistic career

Peter Schnürpel studied painting and graphics at the University of Graphic and Book Art in Leipzig until 1965 . His teachers included Karl Krug , Wolfgang Mattheuer and Bernhard Heisig . After completing his studies, he began to teach art education at the University of Leipzig . As an artist, Schnürpel was one of the most remarkable graphic artists of his generation in Leipzig with his expressive works. His preferred technique was algraphy .

From 1978 he taught at the Technical School for Applied Arts in Schneeberg and in 1987 was appointed honorary professor at the Leipzig University of Graphics and Book Art. From 1990 he was director in Schneeberg and was appointed professor in 1992. In 1993 he was the founding dean of the applied arts department of the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau . In 2006 he retired.

In 1987 he met Rolf Münzner and Reiner Schwarz in the Kätelhön printing workshop . After 1989, study trips took Schnürpel to France, Italy and Switzerland. Also in 1989 began the collaboration with the printer couple Jeanette and Reinhard Rössler, who have been printing his work since then. He is a lecturer at the Lindenau Museum in Altenburg. In addition to Münzner and Schwarz, Schnürpel's companions included Michael Morgner , Gerhard Kurt Müller , Thomas Ranft and Gil Schlesinger , with whom he was shown in a joint exhibition in the Lindenau Museum on his 75th birthday.
