Life and work

Petra Flemming was the only child of Gerhard and Lotte Flemming. Her father worked as a new teacher from 1945 . In 1958 she finished secondary school in Leipzig-Grünau with a ten-year degree . In 1960 she began her preparatory studies at the workers and farmers faculty for fine arts in Dresden . After completing her studies in 1963, she was a volunteer in the painting room of the Leipzig theater workshops from October of that year.

In 1964 she began her studies at the Leipzig College of Graphics and Book Art . Her teachers were Werner Tübke , Hans Mayer-Foreyt , Harry Blume and Heinz Wagner . In 1968 she traveled with fellow students to Moscow and Leningrad. Her first memory pictures and her first self-portrayal “Sitting Nude” were created. Her first solo exhibition took place in the Leipzig picture cabinet with paintings, commercial graphics and etchings. In 1969 she finished her studies in the applied graphics class with Heinz Wagner.

Since then she has been working as a freelance painter and graphic artist in Leipzig. She was a member of the Association of Fine Artists of the GDR. In 1973/74 the three-part panel painting “Women” was created for the Leipzig cotton spinning mill, Naunhof plant. She strived for a realistic representation and felt that she belonged to the Leipzig School. In 1979 she worked on the mural for the Nicolai High School in Leipzig. From 1982 onwards it became increasingly louder and more critical of the political situation in its issues and opinions. In 1988 she began painting mural at the Käthe Kollwitz School in Arnstadt with the theme “Käthe Kollwitz and the like-minded people” . On August 22nd of that year, Petra Flemming died unexpectedly near her workplace.
