The Roman Catholic parish church Altmelon is located in Altmelon in the market town of the same name in the Zwettl district in Lower Austria . The St. James the Elder consecrated parish church belongs to the dean's office Zwettl the diocese of St. Poelten . The church is a listed building .

history

The medieval hall building from the 13th and 15th century was redesigned in Baroque style in 1783 . The parish Altmelon is documented from the year 1374. 1563-1630 she was Protestant . Since 1783 there has been a separate parish again.

Exterior construction

The core of the nave dates back to the 13th century and was raised in 1783. The west wall is smooth. On the north side there are buttresses and baroque, stepped arched windows . The late Gothic , half-set south-east tower with a baroque bell storey and arched sound windows is crowned by a pointed helmet from around 1900. The late Gothic choir with a three-sided end, buttresses and water hammer comes from the 15th century . On the sides there are baroque flat arched windows from the end of the 18th century, in the east there are triangular and below rectangular windows . The sacristy to the north is equipped with a monopitch roof and silhouette pilasters from the mid-19th century. A porch to the south was added towards the end of the 18th century.

The nave, which was rebuilt in 1783, is covered by a two- bay groin vault over belt arches on double pilasters with profiled cornices. A curved, stucco-decorated music gallery rises above a barrel vault . The pointed arch triumphal arch is a mural Twelve Apostles denoted by Alexander Brunner in 1947 , provided. The late Gothic, two-bay, slightly raised choir with a three-eighth end is covered by a ribbed vault on pointed consoles . The sacristy and annex are flat barrel vaulted. The vestibule has a baroque groin vault.

Facility

The church has a neo-Gothic high altar and two Rococo - side altars . The right side altar has an altar leaf Crucifixion and baroque side figures of Saints Leopold and Catherine . The left altar panel represents the Holy Family and is accompanied by figures of Saints Leonhard and Florian . The baroque pulpit , which was made around 1783, is decorated with medallions of the evangelists . The organ from 1964 was made by Gregor Hradetzky . Further furnishings include a baptismal font from the end of the 18th century, two classicist marble tombstones from 1793 and 1797 and, on the outside of the church, a Josephine tombstone of a pastor from 1797.
