The Roman Catholic parish church Großhöflein is in the northern part of the market town Großhöflein in Burgenland . The parish church of St. John the Baptist is part of the Eisenstadt dean's office in the Eisenstadt diocese . The church is a listed building .

history

A pre-Reformation parish was mentioned in a document in 1529. The church was Protestant at times and Catholic again in 1636. According to the inscription, the church was enlarged and consecrated in 1669 with a sanctuary and a sacristy . In 1675 the tower was added. The gallery was moved in in the 17th century. The church was restored after 1683 and after a fire in 1732. 1968 was an exterior restoration, 1974/1975 an interior restoration.

architecture

The late Gothic, remarkably large church building with a west tower has a choir with a three-eighth closure . The upstream four-storey tower with a pilaster structure has a pointed helmet with a balcony below with a dock parapet . The portal is marked 1673 in the lintel and shows a cherub head in the segment gable . Above, in a niche with a halo and an inscription, the stone figure of John the Baptist. The nave has single-tier buttresses with eyelashes and the information 1641, 1649 on the front side of a southern buttress. The choir also has single-tier buttresses.

The three-bay nave has a late Gothic ribbed vault on heraldic consoles . The three-axis west gallery has a groin vault . A wide, pointed arched triumphal arch with pilasters connects the Gothic nave with the early Baroque three-bay choir of the same width with a barrel vaulted cap . There are three stitch caps above the apse . In the middle choir bay there is a round arched niche with stucco decoration on each side . The northern niche shows remains of paintings from the 18th century with putti .

Furnishing

The high altar from the middle of the 18th century is a columnar altar with recessed side parts, has a deep niche and a canopy-like top. In the niche there is a figure of Mary as a miraculous image from Eisenstadt. On the sides the figures of Peter and Paul, John the Baptist and Joseph as well as angels and the eye of God in the essay can be seen.

One bell is marked with Johann Georg Koechel Oedenburg 1772.
