The Roman Catholic parish church of Kittsee is located at the northern end of the municipality of Kittsee in the Neusiedl am See district in Burgenland . It is the Feast of the Exaltation consecrated and belongs to the deanery Neusiedl am See in the diocese Eisenstadt . The building is a listed building .

history

The parish of Kittsee has existed for a very long time and was probably founded before 1250. A medieval church, which was consecrated to St. Pancras , was destroyed in 1529 during the first Turkish siege of Vienna and rebuilt in 1548. This building was originally built on an Anger but disappeared around 1780. 1736 was a baroque church built and the feast of the Assumption consecrated. In 1808 it was consecrated in honor of the Holy Cross . On April 2, 1945, the parish church was blown up by German troops for strategic reasons. In 1948 the foundation stone was laid for a new church. This, with a capacity for around 1250 people, was then built according to the plans of the architect Helene Koller-Buchwieser by the builder Stefan Wilhelm Haderer and inaugurated on November 16, 1952 by Bishop Josef Schoiswohl .

In 1978 the church was restored.

Church building

The three-aisled church has an approx. 36 m high (including cross) integrated west tower with a hood-shaped helmet and a semicircular apse . The nave of the church is banked. Aisles connect to the nave on both sides. The polychrome church windows with depictions of saints and with German and Croatian inscriptions were designed by Professor Lucia Jirgal from Vienna.

Furnishing

On the high altar is a baroque wooden crucifixion group from the first half of the 18th century. An oil painting from the middle of the 18th century hangs over the sacristy door. It shows the " Maria Immaculata ". The font comes from the first half of the 18th century.

On October 26, 2003, Diocesan Bishop Paul Iby placed a relic of Ladislaus Batthyány-Strattmann , beatified by Pope John Paul II on March 23, 2003 in the tabernacle of the Marian altar .

  4. Note: In the literature, including the Dehio, a construction period from 1952 to 1956 is often given. This is likely to be wrong, on the one hand due to the exact date of the church consecration and also because of this photo , which is dated 1950.
