The Roman Catholic parish church of Niedersulz is located in the village of Niedersulz in the municipality of Sulz in the Weinviertel in the Gänserndorf district in Lower Austria . It is consecrated to St. John the Baptist and is located in the dean's office Mistelbach-Pirawarth in the vicariate Unter dem Manhartsberg of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The building is under monument protection ( list entry ).

Location description

The church is raised in the center of the village of Niedersulz and was previously surrounded by a cemetery.

history

The church is essentially a medieval fortified church . The nave is essentially Romanesque and dates from the 13th century. In 1623 it was changed in the early baroque style. Before 1200 there was a parish in Niedersulz which was incorporated into the Heiligenkreuz Abbey .

architecture

Church exterior

The nave has exposed ashlar masonry and baroque arched windows. The west facade is kept simple. A small round window is located above a simple rectangular portal. A volute gable with pilasters is situated above a strong cornice . The choir has moved in and has arched windows. The final window is walled up. A mighty, three-story church tower adjoins the choir on the south side . On the lower two floors it has corner blocks, on the bell storey it is structured as pilasters . It is crowned by a raised onion helmet. The spire is from the 19th century. A baroque entrance building with a volute gable adjoins the south side of the nave.

Church interior

The nave of the church is three-bay and cross-vaulted . The vault rests on sturdy pillars with pilasters. There are belt arches between the vaults . The Heiliggeistloch is profiled. Between the choir and nave there is a narrower transition yoke with transept-like wall niches. The organ gallery is in three parts and rests on pillars. It is of course vault under arches. In between are belt arches. The middle of the parapet is slightly protruding and has a light decoration. The two-bay choir is slightly drawn in and closes at the 3/8 end. Above the choir there is a barrel vault with stitch caps , which rests on pilasters with richly profiled entablature pieces. The sacristy is located on the south-facing tower ground floor . The room is cross-vaulted. The decorative glass window fittings date from 1896.

Furnishing

The high altar was built at the beginning of the 18th century. It is a double columned altar. The crucifix is flanked by putti . In the extract the dove of the Holy Spirit is shown.

The two side altars are baroque. The left side altar consists of a concave structure with composite pillars from the middle of the 18th century. a copy of a “Beautiful Madonna” stands on a console . This is flanked by baroque putti. The right side altar dates from the second half of the 18th century and is a wall altar. The altarpiece shows the Holy Family and dates from the last quarter of the 18th century. In the extract the eye of God is shown.

The pulpit is strictly classicistic and has plait decoration. In the church there are also baroque figures of Saints George , Anna , Peter and Paul . The lecture cross dates from the 18th century. The figure " Christ resting " comes from the 18th century. The Stations of the Cross are from the first half of the 19th century.

organ

The organ was made by Carl Hesse in 1877 .

Peal

The bells were cast by Matthias Glaser in 1685 and by Jakob Schulthes in 1628 .

graveyard

In the former cemetery around the church there are several baroque tombstones, some of which are remarkable, most of which date from the 18th century. The stairway to the church with gate wall and arched gate is structured as pilasters. The portal and the gate wall are from the beginning of the 18th century.
