Parish Church of St. Nicholas

The parish church of St. Nikolaus is a Roman Catholic church building consecrated to Nikolaus von Myra in Auw in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It is located on the southern edge of the village on Auwer Hauptstrasse. Auw is the birthplace of the religious sister Bernarda Bütler , who was canonized in 2008 .

Building

The nave and choir of the hall church were built in 1705 in the baroque style. The auxiliary bishop in Constance , Konrad Ferdinand Geist von Wildegg , inaugurated the church on September 26, 1710. The crucifixion group on the semicircular choir arch probably comes from the original construction period of the church, the baroque baptismal chalice was possibly made in 1638, the year the parish was founded, for the St. Nicholas chapel, which stood there until the church was built. In 1718 a vestibule was built over the entrance stairs, supported by pairs of Tuscan columns . The parish had builder Lorenz Rey add a square church tower with a bell dome on the northeast side in 1749/50 , and a new bell was also cast for the occasion.

The first organ in the church was brought here from the Hermetschwil monastery in 1766 . In 1795 the interior was completely renovated in the late Rococo style. The high altar dates from 1803 or 1805. On this Marian altar the Mother of God Mary is depicted with the baby Jesus , on the altar painting between St. Anna and St. Joachim , on the altar sculpture with a crown. The side altars, the canopy , the ceiling frescoes and stucco decorations date from 1795. The side altars are dedicated to the patron saints of the church, St. Nicholas and St. Wendelin , the large side altar paintings were possibly by Josef Anton Mesmer , the ceiling paintings by Mesmer or Joseph Keller painted. The four large frescoes on the ceiling depict the Last Supper (above the choir), the church blessing (in front of the choir), Assumption of Mary (main picture in the center) and King David with harp (in front of the organ gallery). The neo-Gothic crucifix with the crucified Jesus Christ in front the church entrance dates from the 1870s or 1880s.

On the occasion of her canonization in 2008, Bishop Kurt Koch consecrated the altar of St. Bernarda Bütler , who was born in Auw in 1848 and baptized in this church. Her birthplace is nearby on Bachweg 4. Opposite the church on the other side of the street is the rectory, a simple, plastered half-timbered house built in 1834 .
