Phenmedipham is a chemical compound from the group of carbanilates or biscarbamates , which is used as a herbicide . It is in the form of a colorless and odorless powder.

history

Phenmedipham was approved in the USA in 1970 at the request of Schering AG . Around 100 tons are used there every year.

Extraction and presentation

Phenmedipham can be obtained from the precursor methylaniline .

use

Phenmedipham is used as a selective herbicide, which is absorbed through the leaves of the plants. It is particularly often used for tracking broad-leaved annual weeds in beets (sugar beet, fodder beet, beetroot), spinach and strawberries. It acts by acting on the electron transport during photosynthesis . It breaks down in the soil through hydrolysis and microbially quickly into methyl (3-hydroxyphenyl) carbamate (MHPC) and m -toluidine .

Phenmedipham is approved as an active ingredient in plant protection products in many EU countries, including Germany and Austria, as well as Switzerland.
