Philip Kunig

Philip Kunig (born May 12, 1951 in Osnabrück ) is a German legal scholar and professor of constitutional law , administrative law and international law at the Free University of Berlin .

Life

Kunig graduated from the Ratsgymnasium Osnabrück in 1970 . He studied Sinology and Law at the University of Hamburg with a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . In 1976 he completed his studies with the first state examination in law. Kunig then worked as a research assistant for Ingo von Münch at the Institute for International Affairs at the University of Hamburg. In 1980 he passed the State Examination at the Judicial Examination Office of the states of Hamburg, Bremen and Schleswig-Holstein and was awarded a doctorate in law. PhD. In 1985, Kunig became known with his work “Das Rechtsstaatsprinzip. Reflections on its Significance for the Constitutional Law of the Federal Republic of Germany ”completed his habilitation and received the Venia legendi for constitutional law, administrative law, international law and comparative law in public law. He represented Jost Delbrück's chair at the University of Kiel . In 1986 Kunig was appointed professor for public law at the University of Hamburg. He received offers from the University of the Federal Armed Forces and the University of Heidelberg , where he accepted the latter. In 1988 Kunig accepted a professorship from the Free University of Berlin and held the chair for constitutional law, administrative law and international law. He turned down offers from Heidelberg University (successor to Friedrich Müller 1990), Kiel University (successor to Rüdiger Wolfrum in 1994) and the University of Regensburg (successor to Otto Kimminich in 1999). In 2016 he retired from the Free University of Berlin. He is now a full professor at the Faculty of Law at the Turkish-German University , where he has been teaching public law and international law since 2013.

From 1992 to 2000 Philip Kunig was a part-time judge at the Constitutional Court of the State of Berlin, which was newly established after reunification .

Teaching and lecturing activities and visiting professorships led him a. a. to Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, Hanoi, Bangkok, Istanbul and Ankara.

In 2012 the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens awarded him an honorary doctorate , on June 4, 2013 the University of Istanbul .

Research priorities and other functions

Kunig's main research areas are constitutional law , international law, sub-areas of administrative law as well as national and international environmental law , with a particular interest in Asian legal and cultural areas. He is the author of numerous books and editor of a commentary on the Basic Law . He is vice-president of the consortium for the establishment of the German-Turkish University and since 2012 chairman of the board of the German-Turkish Lawyers' Association eV Kunig was director of the Center for International Cooperation of the Free University of Berlin from 2010.

Kunig is co-editor of the journals Archive of International Law , Constitution and Law in Overseas , Nature and Law , Deutsches Verwaltungsblatt as well as the series of international law and foreign policy and New Writings on Constitutional Law . He was co-editor of JURA magazine .
