Philipp Braun (theologian)

Philipp Braun (born March 22, 1654 in Hollstadt , † June 1, 1735 in Würzburg ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman , canon lawyer and university professor .

Life

After Braun received his first education in his homeland, he entered the seminary in Würzburg on October 31, 1670 . In addition to studying theology, he also devoted himself to studying law . He was ordained priest in 1678 and the following year he was appointed sub-rain of the seminary. He was sent to Rome for further training by Prince Bishop Peter Philipp von Dernbach . There he also became a teacher of theology at Johannes Konvikt in 1681 .

After his return to Würzburg in 1683, Braun became the reign of the seminary and at the same time received a chair for canon law at the University of Würzburg . On June 25, 1685 he was promoted to Dr. iur. utr. doctorate , on June 26, 1691 Dr. theol. In 1693 he was appointed collegiate and preacher at the Haug Abbey . In 1700 he resigned his professorship , meanwhile appointed Apostolic Protonotary .

Braun was appointed vicar general of the diocese of Würzburg in 1705 under Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Greiffenclau zu Vollraths . He carried out the office until the bishop's death in 1719. From May 21, 1711 he also held the office of dean at the Würzburg Collegiate Foundation. Two more trips to Rome followed during this time.
