Philipp Graff
Julius Philipp Graff (born November 7, 1813 in Berlin ; † March 3, 1851 ibid) was a German mechanic and daguerreotypist in Berlin.
Life
Philipp Graff is considered one of the most important Berlin daguerreotypists, who not only made a name for himself through his photographs; the Graff mixture named after him was a method of increasing sensitivity.
The mechanic Philipp Graff ran his photographic studio at Jerusalemer Strasse 18 in Berlin, “across from Kronenstrasse”. He was first mentioned as a daguerreotypist in the Berlin address book of 1845 with this profession.
As early as 1843, Graff advertised his company with various stickers, many of which are now in the Agfa Foto-Historama V collection in Cologne . One of the stickers identifies Graff as a court photographer “His Royal Highness the Prince Adalbert of Prussia ”.
Another sticker by Graff in the Agfa collection shows a M. Hoffmann who offered his services in “Berlin, Graffs Atelier”, possibly as Graff's successor.
Graff died in 1851, at the young age of 37. Nevertheless, the long-standing research project led by Sibylle Einholz on the Berlin photography studios in the 19th century at the Berlin University of Technology and Economics has a studio operated under Graff's name, also Jerusalemer Straße 18 from 1870 to 1887 and from 1887 to 1891 at the address Leipziger Straße 114. A photograph depicting Ferdinand Lassalle from 1860 bears the imprint on the reverse: “18. Jerusalemer Str. 18. Philipp Graff. Hof Photographer Sr. Königl. Highness of Prince Adalbert of Prussia. Berlin 18. Jerusalemer Str. 18 across from Kronen Strasse. ”In the Berlin address book from 1859 it is entered both under this address and under the traders.
In addition, one of Graff's stickers in the Agfa collection shows two awards from “Philipp Graff”, including a “Dem Merit” medal from 1865 at the first photographic exhibition of the Photographisches Verein zu Berlin . A photo dated by Danuta Thiel-Melerski between 1888 and 1892 shows an honoring medal from Paris from 1867 on the lapel ; at the same time, a Carl Georgi is identified as the owner of the photo studio at Leipziger Strasse 114 .
A portrait of Phillip Graff out of time "before 1854" by an unknown daguerreotypists arrived on the estate of Görlitz photographers Robert Scholz in the Daguerreotypiecollection the Municipal Collections of History and Culture Görlitz . in the cultural history museum Görlitz .
Graff was married to Mathilde Beer since 1849. After his death, his atelier was continued by his widow from 1851 until her death in 1854, and then by her brother August Beer until the 1890s.
