Philipp Ludwig of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Wiesenburg (born October 27, 1620 in Beck , † March 10, 1689 in Schneeberg ) was the first Duke of and founder of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Wiesenburg line . His family branch of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg renamed itself after near Zwickau lying Wiesenburg Castle .

Life

Philipp Ludwig was the youngest son of Duke Alexander of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg (1573–1627) from his marriage to Dorothea (1579–1639), daughter of Count Johann Günther I of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen .

Philipp Ludwig initially lived at various courts in Hesse. In 1663 he acquired the rule of Wiesenburg with the castle as well as the town of Kirchberg and 20 villages from the Saxon elector Johann Georg II , with whom he had a very good relationship . Wiesenburg Castle became the seat of the duke and gave his line its name.

In 1668 he ordered Johann Winckler to bring up his sons in Wiesenburg. By promoting mining in Schneeberg and Neustädtel , Philipp Ludwig became wealthy and had Wiesenburg Castle extensively renovated and rebuilt.

Under the company name Der Wohlgeartete he was accepted as a member of the Fruitful Society .

Until 1672 Philipp Ludwig was an imperial field marshal lieutenant in a cuirassier regiment. In 1675 he sold the Wiesenburg castle and office to his eldest son. Philipp Ludwig acquired Oberkotzau in 1686 and lived with his friend Veit Hans Schnorr von Carolsfeld in Schneeberg before his death .

Marriages and offspring

His first marriage was on November 15, 1643 in Lemgo with Catharina (1612–1649), daughter of Count Christian von Waldeck-Wildungen. The marriage had two children:

On May 5, 1650 he married in Homburg his second wife Anna Margarete (1629-1686), the daughter of the Landgrave Frederick I of Hesse-Homburg . He had the following children with her:

For the third time he married Magdalene Christine (1652-1697), daughter of Count Heinrich I von Reuss zu Obergreiz, in Greiz on July 28, 1688. This marriage remained childless.
