Philipp Sarasin (psychiatrist)

Philipp Alfred Sarasin (born May 22, 1888 in Basel ; † November 28, 1968 in Basel ) was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst .

Life

Sarasin studied medicine and passed the state examination in 1915 . He then worked as a trainee with Eugen Bleuler at the Burghölzli institution and began Jungian psychoanalysis with Franz Riklin . From 1916 to 1921 he worked under Friedrich Ris at the Rheinau institution . He received his doctorate from Bleuler in 1919. He completed another short psychoanalysis with Hanns Sachs . In 1920 he met Sigmund Freud at the congress of the International Psychoanalytic Association in The Hague , from whom he was analyzed from spring 1921. Back in Basel, he worked as a volunteer at the newly founded Psychiatric Polyclinic . In 1924 he opened a psychoanalytical practice on Gartenstrasse, which he ran until his death. In 1960 he suffered a heart attack . His grave is on the Wolfgottesacker .

Sarasin was a founding member in 1919 and President of the Swiss Society for Psychoanalysis from 1928 to 1961 .
