Philipp Wagner (philologist)
Philipp Wagner (full name Georg Philipp Eberhard Wagner , born March 19, 1794 in Schönbrunn near Wolkenstein , † December 20, 1873 in Dresden ) was a German classical philologist and grammar school teacher who worked at the Kreuzgymnasium in Dresden (1817-1854). He is particularly known as a researcher on Virgil .
Life
Philipp Wagner came from a pastor family. His grandfather Johann Georg Wagner (1714–1781) had been field preacher from 1744 and pastor in Schönbrunn from 1747, his father Georg Traugott Wagner (1758–1836) was deputy pastor there from 1780 and pastor from 1782; In 1796 he moved to Mildenau as a deputy pastor , where he was appointed pastor in 1800. Of his eleven children, only five reached adulthood.
Philipp Wagner attended the Pforta State School from 1808 and studied Classical Philology at the University of Leipzig from 1813 . There he belonged to the philological seminar under Christian Daniel Beck , acquired his master's degree and doctorate (Dr. phil., February 29, 1816). After completing his studies, in 1816 he published an edition of the anonymous Elegia ad M. Valerium Messalam , an elegy from the Roman Empire . Wagner got his first job in December 1816 as vice principal at the grammar school in Guben . But already at Michaelis 1817 he moved to the Kreuzgymnasium in Dresden, where he lived and worked until the end of his life. At first he held the fourth teaching position. In January 1833 he was appointed deputy principal. For health reasons, he retired in September 1854, but continued to do research for a few years. He auctioned his private library in 1856.
Wagner's research focused on Virgil's poems and their transmission. He revised the then authoritative edition by Christian Gottlob Heyne on behalf of the publishing house and published its fourth edition in five volumes from 1830–1841. Independent contributions Wagner were the Quaestiones Virgilianae in the fourth volume and the fifth volume in which he presented Virgil's poems in an (in his opinion) original orthography . To a certain extent, as an accessory to this edition, Wagner published special studies on ancient giltering explanations, manual editions and school editions, as well as a collection of suggestions for improving the text ( Lectionum Vergilianarum libellus , 1859). However, he was not limited to Virgil, but also published an introduction to Greek tragedy and ancient theater on the occasion of a performance of Sophocles ' Antigone (1844).
In recognition of his life's work, Wagner was made a knight of the Royal Saxon Order of Albrecht in 1866 .
