Philipp Wilhelm came from the Bergisch noble family of the Nesselrode . He was the son of Franz von Nesselrode-Reichenstein and Anna Maria Freiin von Wylich . As a child (1683) he was accepted into the Order of Malta , although according to the rules, entry was only possible from the age of eight. His acceptance falls during the short term of office of the German Grand Prior Gottfried Droste zu Vischering (Grand Prior) , who was related to the Nesselrode. Since seniority played a major role in the allocation of offices in the order , Philipp Wilhelm had a starting advantage. In 1705 he became Commander of the Coming Hall-Affaltrach in Schwäbisch Hall . In the following years he was at times Commander in Chief in Frankfurt am Main , Herford and Lage , as well as in Schleusingen and Weissensee . In these comings he stayed only a little, but fought with the Maltese fleet against the Turks. In 1721 he was promoted to Grand Balli and took over the supervision of the fortifications on Malta . On January 10, 1728, he was elected Grand Prior of the German Maltese, with which he also became Imperial Prince .

In Malta he had held many offices over the years, including that of captain general of the galleys of the Order of Malta's fleet in 1722 . In Germany he was appointed imperial secret council in 1733 .

In Heitersheim he initiated brisk construction activity. The chancellery building, the tithe barn and the house for the chancellor of the order are adorned with his coat of arms. In Valetta, Nesselrode donated an altar in the Church of Our Virgin of Victory . He is also credited with the introduction of street lighting in Valetta, which was carried out using statues of saints.

Nesselrode was buried in the Chapel of the German Tongue in St. John's Cathedral in Valetta .
