Franz von Nesselrode-Reichenstein

Franz von Nesselrode-Reichenstein (* 23. June 1635 in Herten Castle ; † 5. December 1707 in Herten Castle) was a Catholic nobleman from the House Nesselrode , diplomat , patron and kurkölnischer governor in Vest Recklinghausen . By Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz , he was in a letter to the Landgrave Ernst Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt referred to as "un seignieur d'un grand mérite".

origin

His father was Bertram von Nesselrode (1592–1678), Lord von Stein and Ehrenstein, his mother was Countess Lucia von Hatzfeld , a sister of the general Melchior von Hatzfeldt . His brother Johann Franz Hermann von Nesselrode was an imperial general.

Life

Herten Castle, the Count's residence

He grew up as Baron Franz von Nesselrode in Herten Castle in Vest Recklinghausen in the Electorate of Cologne and was Imperial Chamberlain and Privy Councilor of Electoral Cologne . He was also the governor of the Elector of Cologne in Vest Recklinghausen. He was married to Anna Maria von Wylich , daughter of Freiherr Friedrich Karl von Wylich zu Richolt and Winnenthal , and had eight children with her. Four of his five daughters entered the Ursuline order . His daughter Johanna Petronella Victoria Maria Anna (1670–1698) married the baron and later Count Damian Hugo von Virmont in 1693 . His son Philipp Wilhelm von Nesselrode and Reichenstein was the Grand Prior of the German Maltese and thus imperial prince . A cousin of Nesselrode was the Hildesheim prince-bishop Jodocus Edmund von Brabeck .

At the peace treaties of Nijmegen in 1678 and Karlowitz in 1699 he appeared as a skilful ambassador and was thus able to gain greater prominence as an excellent diplomat. In 1699 he also appeared as the founder of the Ursuline monastery in Dorsten , which was founded on the initiative of his daughter Maria Lucia. With the acquisition of the imperial rule of Reichenstein in the Westerwald , Nesselrode was raised to the rank of imperial count by Emperor Leopold I in 1702 and was henceforth called Nesselrode-Reichenstein.

He died at the age of 72 in Herten Castle.

In 1661 he married the baroness Anna Maria von Wylich (* 1644; † August 26, 1720). The couple had several children:
