Philippe Perrin (born January 6, 1963 in Meknes , Morocco ) is a French former astronaut .
Life
Pilot career
Perrin studied from 1982 to 1985 at the École polytechnique in Paris. This was interrupted by his military service in the French Navy , which also took him six months in the Indian Ocean. After graduating, he joined the French Air Force . He passed his training as a fighter pilot in 1986 as the best of his year. He was stationed in Strasbourg , but also served briefly in Africa and Saudi Arabia.
In 1992 he was seconded to the CNES . As of November 1992, he coached two months at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia's Star City and was given an insight into the technology of the Soyuz-TM spacecraft , the Mir space station , as well as spacewalks .
In 1993 he was trained as a test pilot at the Ecole du Personnel Navigant d'Essais et de Réception (EPNER) test pilot school in Istres . Then he was transferred first to the test center in Brétigny-sur-Orge , and in 1993 to Dijon . In 1995 he went back to Brétigny and became deputy chief test pilot for the Mirage 2000-5 .
At NASA
In July 1996 he was introduced to the public by the CNES as an astronaut candidate and sent to NASA for training. Together with NASA Group 16, he was trained as a mission specialist at the Johnson Space Center in Houston from August 1996 . After graduating in August 1998, he worked on the further development of the Space Shuttle , the X-38 and the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV).
In June 2002, Perrin participated as a mission specialist in the two-week STS-111 space flight of the space shuttle Endeavor . A new crew, the Canadian Mobile Base System and the Multipurpose Logistics Module (MPLM) Leonardo were brought to the International Space Station (ISS). Perrin and his colleague Chang-Diaz mounted at three spacewalks , the Mobile Base System (EVAs) and repaired the Canadian robotic arm Canadarm2 . Perrin became the second French spaceman after Jean-Loup Chrétien to undertake a space exit and the first to do so from a space shuttle. At the end of the mission, Perrin operated the shuttle's robotic arm to get the MPLM back into the shuttle.
ESA and Airbus
After his space flight, Perrin was integrated into the European Astronaut Corps (EAC) of ESA in December 2002 , where he worked in Toulouse on the development of the ATV . On May 1, 2004, he left ESA and became a test pilot at Airbus . He had the French commercial pilot license since 1995, the American one since 1999. Since then he has worked as a test pilot for Airbus. He was the captain of the first flight of the cargo version of the Airbus A330-200 , which took place on November 5, 2009.
