The Philipps Castle was a late medieval castle on the Freising Cathedral Hill .

history

The castle was built by order of Prince-Bishop Philipp von der Pfalz from 1534 to 1537. Philipp was Prince-Bishop of the Principality of Freising from 1498 and Prince-Bishop of the Diocese of Naumburg-Zeitz from 1534 . Philipp intended to give up his office as bishop in favor of his brother Heinrich and wanted to use the castle as a retirement home. However, he died in office in 1541.

The four-wing building stood on the north side of Toompea. From the middle of the 17th century until 1912, beer was brewed here by the Hofbrauhaus Freising . After the brewery moved, the annexes that had been built over time for the operation were demolished. At that time a vocational school was housed here. The Pallottines had their first seat here in Freising from 1919 to 1930 before they moved to the newly built missionary seminary north of the city center. After the Second World War, the castle was used as a residential building. From 1975 to 1980 the new building of the cathedral grammar school Freising was erected on the grounds of the castle and two neighboring canons . Original plans to completely tear down the castle were prevented, so that some parts were integrated into the new building. Among other things, the south facade towards the cathedral and a vaulted hall were preserved.
