Phoenix is a French indie pop band from Versailles .

Band history

Deck D'Arcy, Thomas Mars and Christian Mazzalai went to school together when they formed their first band together in 1991. In 1995 Christian Mazzalai brought his brother Laurent Brancowitz into the band, who until then was guitarist in a band with Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem Christo, who later founded Daft Punk . The band has been called Phoenix since 1997. In 2000 the album United , which later became influential among musicians , was released, followed in 2004 by the album Alphabetical with the successful pieces Everything Is Everything and Run Run Run . In the same year the band also played at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park . In 2005 they recorded the album It's Never Been Like That in Berlin , which was released on May 15, 2006. In May 2009, Philippe Zdar (Cassius) produced the album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix , for which the band received the Grammy Award for best alternative album in 2010 . Furthermore, the band recorded an unplugged album on October 12th on NDR radio ( N-Joy ), which did not go on sale. It was included in the February issue of Musikexpress magazine as a free CD and contains eight tracks, including the single 1901 , which was popularized by a commercial for the mobile network operator O 2 . Your album Bankrupt! was released on April 19, 2013. On June 9, 2017 the album Ti Amo was released . In 2020 Phoenix released the single Identical , a tribute to producer Philippe Zdar, who died in 2019, which is part of the soundtracks for Sofia Coppola's film On The Rocks .

Others

The title Too Young from the album United was in the movie Shallow Hal (Shallow Hal) used and is also included on the soundtrack album for the film.

A prominent fan of the band is Sofia Coppola , who used the song Too Young from the album United in her film Lost in Translation . In Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antoinette from 2006, the group made a brief guest appearance as court musicians. Thomas Mars, the singer of the band, has lived with Sofia Coppola since 2005. They have two daughters together. Sofia Coppola's brother Roman produced a music video for the song Funky Squaredance, which should not be taken very seriously. The band is also well known with Air . For the film The Virgin Suicides , Thomas Mars supported the film music produced by Air as "Gordon Tracks" with his singing for the song Playground Love .

In 2005, Everything Is Everything was the theme song for the Sat.1 series LiebesLeben .

The Buffalo Bunch remix of If I Ever Feel Better , which is already a classic in the club scene, has also become known. 2011, the title of was Julian Perretta gecovert .

In 2010 the band's song Lisztomania was featured in the film Friendship! (2010, with Matthias Schweighöfer) used.

Thomas Mars is the nephew of the German journalist and literary critic Hellmuth Karasek and the writer Horst Karasek .

Phoenix wrote the music for Sofia Coppola's 2010 film Somewhere . In Coppola's film The Bling Ring , the song is Bankrupt! to listen. They appeared in the Christmas film A Very Murray Christmas in 2015. The music for the film Die Verführten followed in 2017 .
