The Phra Phutthayotfa Bridge ( Thai สะพาน พระพุทธ ยอด ฟ้า , RTGS Saphan Phra Phutthayotfa , also short: สะพาน พุ ท , Saphan Phut , English Memorial Bridge ) is a bridge over the Mae Nam Chao Phraya ( Chao Phraya River ) in Bangkok , in Thailand . It connects the two city districts ( Khet ) Phra Nakhon and Thonburi .
technology
The Saphan Phut is a three-part steel construction, the middle part of which could originally be folded up to allow larger ships to pass through. Each of the three parts is 78 meters long. The driveway on the Thonburi side is 130 meters long, the one on the Rattanakosin side 314 meters.
history
Construction of the bridge began on December 3, 1929 and was built by Dorman Long , a well-known bridge builder from Middlesbrough , England . On April 6, 1932, the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Chakri dynasty , the bridge was inaugurated by King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) . In English usage the bridge is called "Memorial Bridge" (Bridge of Remembrance) , since the official name in Thai is สะพาน ปฐม บรม ราชานุ สร ณ์(Saphan Pathom Borom Ratchanuson) , which means something like "Bridge of Royal Memory". It is said to commemorate the founder of the Chakri dynasty, King Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok (Rama I) .
