action
Kate Mosley works in an advertising agency and is in love with her colleague Sam Mayfair. However, she is not getting on, which, according to her boss, Mr. Mercer, is because she has no obligations - neither married nor at least engaged . At a friend's wedding, she meets the wedding filmmaker Nick and is photographed with him. At the agency, her friend Darcy ( Illeana Douglas ) spreads the rumor that the man in the photo is Kate's fiancé and suddenly everything turns for the better for her: she gets a promotion, is invited to business parties and even Sam shows interest in her and begins an affair . So Kate lets everyone believe she's engaged, sends herself flowers, fakes phone calls, and scatters other clues about Nick.
Nick rescues a child from a fire and becomes known in the media. Many people want to get to know him. Kate explains her misery to him and makes a deal with him: he comes to New York City , lives with her and takes her to an important business lunch, where he is supposed to start an argument with her and break up with her. He agrees.
Nick falls in love with Kate and doesn't want to play the fight. Finally, at her insistence, he does it and makes a scene for her, combined with a declaration of love. Kate got what she wanted, but is not happy. Suddenly Sam is no longer interested in her, but accidentally gives her a black eye in parting .
When Nick says goodbye to her, she gives him the $ 1,000 she originally offered for his services. He gets angry and leaves.
Just before her important presentation, for which she did all of this, Nick sends her an envelope containing the $ 1,000 and a watch her father gave her. Realizing that she loves him, she confesses to the hoax and risks losing her job. However, Mr. Mercer does not accept the resignation. He tells Kate that he cheated on his first application himself and tells her to go to Nick.
Kate goes to Massachusetts , where Nick is filming a wedding. He doesn't want to talk to her, but she's disrupting the wedding and so he has to talk to her. In front of the assembled wedding party, she confesses her feelings to him. The two kiss and everyone present cheers.
