Pier Capponi (politician)
Pier Capponi (* 1446 in Florence , † 1496 in Terricciola ) was a Tuscan merchant , diplomat , politician and general .
Life
The Capponi family produced numerous merchants, bankers, officials and politicians. Pier Capponi began his career as a businessman. Lorenzo il Magnifico soon became aware of him and sent him to various courts as an ambassador . After Lorenzo's death he ran into opposition to the weak Piero de 'Medici and soon led the opposition to the rule of the Medici . Piero de 'Medici expelled him from Florence in 1494. When the republic was proclaimed in the city , he became one of its political leaders along with Savonarola , Francesco Valori, Paolo Soderini and Antonio Vespucci.
When France's King Charles VIII invaded Italy in 1495 to secure the throne of Naples, he sparked the Italian Wars . While Karl's stay in Florence broke in Tuscany at different locations from one arch rivals Pisa instigated revolution against the domination of Florence and the Medici. The republic had to muster numerous soldiers to restore its own rule in Tuscany. One of the leaders of the Florentine troops in the so-called Florentine-Pisan War was Pier Capponi.
At the head of his soldiers, he was shot in the head in front of the castle of Soiana near Terricciola di Pisa.
Capponi was best known for successfully opposing Charles VIII's interference in Florentine affairs.
