Pilar Baumeister (born August 25, 1948 as Pilar Andreo Vila in Barcelona , Spain ; † December 19, 2021 ) was a Spanish-German author of poetry , novels , literary essays and short stories . She has been blind since she was born , but only wrote secondarily about blind-specific topics such as in her dissertation or in some short stories such as Blind, but not sterile . Life

Pilar Baumeister was born in Barcelona in 1948 and lived in Germany from 1975: the first four years in Bonn and Marburg , from 1979 in Cologne . She studied German, English and Russian philology . In 1990 she completed her doctorate in German at the University of Cologne with her dissertation The literary figure of the blind in the 19th and 20th centuries - clichés, prejudices and realistic depictions of the blind's fate .

In 1992 she and other authors founded the nationwide association for blind and visually impaired writers and their friends. V., which dissolved after a short existence, but from which the artistic Europe-wide project Lyrikbrücken by Bernd Kebelmann and other blind poets from ten countries arose.

From 2006 onwards, as a spokesperson for writers with multicultural roots, she led projects promoting readings by migrant authors in German. Before she retired in 2013, she worked as an administrative clerk at an energy supply company for over 30 years . Occasionally she worked as a lecturer for Spanish at the VHS Cologne and as a literary translator .

In 2018 she became a member of the PEN Center Germany, and from 2019 she was a member of the federal board of the Association of German Writers . She died in December 2021 and is to be buried on December 28, 2021 in the Kalker Friedhof in Cologne-Merheim.
