Piura is a city in the north of the South American Andean state of Peru and the capital of the Piura region of the same name , located on the Piura River. It is located in the district of the same name in the province of Piura . In the 2017 census, 149,982 people lived in the urban area. The population in the metropolitan area was 473,025.

Piura was founded in 1532 on the banks of the Río Chira by Francisco Pizarro as San Miguel de Piura and was the first Spanish city ​​on the soil of today's Peru. A few years later, it was relocated to its current location approx. 38 km further southeast. Only a few buildings from the colonial era have survived. The cathedral dates from 1588.

The city became known worldwide literarily through the novel "La casa verde" (German title: The green house ) by Mario Vargas Llosa .

The city's most famous son is the Peruvian admiral and national hero Miguel Grau Seminario .
