The Plankenhorn (ital. Corno Planca , 2543  m slm ) is a summit in the eastern main ridge of the Sarntal Alps . To the south-west is the Fortschellscharte ( 2299  m ), which separates the Plankenhorn from the Kassianspitze . To the north is the Gaishorn ( 2514  m ) and in the further course of the main ridge, separated by the Schalderer Scharte , is the Schrotthorn ( 2590  m ). At the Plankenhorn, a side ridge branches off from the main ridge, initially to the south-east in the direction of the Lorenzispitze , and from there east to the Königsangerspitze . Unlike most of the neighboring peaks, there is no cross on the summit.

Only about three kilometers to the west - in the Getrumkamm branching off from the main ridge and protruding into the Durnholz Valley - is a mountain of the same name, the Plankenhorn , which is slightly higher at 2589  m .

Climbs

The Plankenhorn is relatively seldom visited, mostly in winter, as a snowshoe or ski tour. In summer and winter, the ascent mostly takes place via the Fortschellscharte and the southwest ridge. The ascent is pathless, but there are no difficulties. The Forschellscharte can be reached from the southwest or south from the Klausner Hut or the Latzfonser Kreuz mountain hut, or alternatively from the west from the Durnholzer Valley .

Another ascent variant is the connection ridge to the south-east Lorenzispitze ( 2483  m ), which requires some surefootedness . The Plankenhorn can also be climbed from the north, from the Schalderer Scharte that connects the Durnholzer with the Schalderer valley and further over the Gaishorn.
